The past few weeks I have really had the nations on my heart. It is so easy for me to get caught up in my little corner of the world and disconnect from the globe. But God is stirring something fresh in my heart.
Recently, I have had the opportunity to talk with people from all around the world. It started with a conversation about the potential for me to be a board member of a non profit that operates in Ethiopia. Continued with a conversation with an Ethiopian business man in my Starbucks. Went a bit deeper listening to a Holocaust Survivor’s story. And has gone much deeper with friendships that I have formed with International Students at a local college.
Those from around the world have so much to offer us. Their perspective is so different, yet very refreshing. As I open my ears to what is happening around the world I feel like I am learning so much about life. The things others value is so different from my American upbringing. For instance, knowledge and education are treasured by others, while I have a tendency to take those things for granted.
I am also learning how much I have to offer. This perspective has dramatically changed for me recently. I think, unknowingly I had this attitude that said “I am an American and I have something better to offer you.” But now, I am learning I have friendship to offer. I have different perspectives for us to talk about. I have friendships and networks that might be helpful for someone new to the area. I also have some, although limited, knowledge of how to navigate my way through the American culture. I can offer simple tips and advice. I can offer a ride. Try and make sense out of a bill or what it takes to get a driver’s license. I can even offer my car and time to give the necessary experience they need behind the wheel to be able to pass their driving test.
I am very excited about some of the conversations that I have been a part of, but one of the most exciting conversations that is happening, is local pastors who are talking about what it would look like for an International congregation to form in York. Several churches in Harrisburg are embracing the idea that the world has come to us. They are learning what it means to celebrate Jesus together. In some ways, people from all around the world are gathering together and are learning to share their faith and life with one another, and I am so excited to watch and be apart of what’s happening!
