A few weeks ago I officially became a driver for our local school bus company. In these brief weeks of driving occasionally I have been learning a lot about the community in which I live.
1. Our school bus company work really hard to keep kids safe and get everyone to where they need to be. There is no doubt this task is way harder then I would have ever imagined. I am grateful for their hard work.
2. My community is extremely diverse. This is something I have known but have the opportunity to get a deeper glimpse of. Each sports team carries its own unique group of kids. Each bus holds kids from different parts of the district and no bus is a like. All the ages of the students riding the buses carry with them their own unique life stage. This diversity has helped me to be thankful for the hard work of teachers and administration. There jobs continue to get harder with each passing year.
3. There are a lot of good people in my Community. Just today a bus driver shared that he doesn’t do this for the pay. He does it as a way to give back. Our bus drivers are very diverse in age, gender, race, and economic status but one thing is for sure. Many of them do this job because they care about the kids.
Speaking of good people. The kids have been great. Many say “thanks for the ride” or “have a nice day”. They don’t look at the things that divide. They see people.
As I drive bus I feel like I am becoming a deeper part of the community. I feel like I have an important role to play. And in a very weird way I believe that God is using this to expand my influence in the community. Bus drivers are an important part of the community. So next time you see a yellow bus. Wave and smile.
