Stop Opposing God

A few weeks ago, at an event I was attending, a friend I have been getting to know over the past two years mentioned that he has been enjoying reading my posts. This led to a deep conversation about faith while walking around on a tour. It was pretty cool.

He mentioned that he is starting to look for a church for himself and his family. I asked him what was leading him in this direction. He said something along the lines of, “I grew up Catholic and then began to do my own thing. With all that is going on in our society, I want to lean back in and try to understand what God’s perspective is.”

Wow!

This morning, as I read the scriptures, I was reminded of this conversation when I came across the phrase “Cease Opposing God.”

Without saying it, this is what I heard this young man say. So many of us allow our own desires to rule and dominate our beliefs and actions. What would happen if our desire was to simply “cease opposing God”?

What would happen if we began to ask God to reveal to us what He thinks? What would happen if we asked God to show us what to believe and how to interact with the world?

The issues of the day are complex. The division on issues is real. We end up hating each other because we have opposing views on significant matters. What if we began to agree that together, we are going to simply seek to “stop opposing God”? That we are going to lean in, have hard conversations, listen, learn, and study the scriptures, trusting that God will guide us into all truth. We don’t need to walk away from those we disagree with. We can just have open and honest dialogue.

This will likely be hard for me to flesh out, but this is my desire. I believe God wants me to be able to disagree with the brother down the road, and yet still grab a coffee with him. We don’t need to be like the religious leaders in the scriptures who sought to kill those who opposed their views.

Practicing the way of Jesus invites us to live differently. Let’s do this together!

Election Results- Seeing Others

The preacher got up and started talking about the election results, but his focus was a little bit different. He questioned whether or not you were able to see the excitement and disappointment of others. In these moments it’s easy to focus on how we feel. The emotions are real.

The pastor quickly turned our focus from ourselves to seeing others, to communion, which focused all of us on Jesus. We then sang songs of worship focused on God, before He got up to teach.

He Preached on Jesus pointing out to His disciples, the poor women, whom he saw give her everything at the Temple. Others should have been caring for her, but here she was down to her very last and she continued to give. Jesus saw her.

On the Sunday after the Election our Pastor saw us. Democrat, Republican, and those so confused they didn’t want to vote. He saw us and pointed us to the one who can carry our burdens. Jesus loves you. He sees you. In your pain, sorrow, brokenness. In your joy, hope and pride. Jesus sees you!

This week may we turn a corner. May we start to see others. May we start healthy conversations of listening and learning from one another.

Thank you @AaronAnderson @Living Word Community Church for seeing your people and point us to follow your lead, as you follow Jesus.

Don’t Become Like Them

This morning, as I sit here and read the scriptures, I can’t help but think that we are falling into a trap that the Scriptures warned us about. Over and over again in the Scriptures we see the people of God being challenged to be separate, to be set a part, from those around them.

But today I see Christians trying so hard to fit in. We have adopted so many of the cultural norms that I believe in many ways we no longer stand out. The people of God are to observe the ways of God, do we even know what this means or looks like in today’s culture?

  • What are the ways of God?
  • What are the ways of the world?
  • Are you bowing down and serving other gods with your thoughts and actions?

I read this Old Testament text and the warning seem very clear to the people of God. Joshua 23:1-16

“Therefore be very steadfast to observe and do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses”

“Be very careful, therefore, to love the Lord your God.”

God has planned good for his people, but we must remain focused on him and his ways. I will not become trapped by way of the world. May we fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith and may may we become more and more like him.

My Faith Requires me to HOPE

Wow has the world ever changed since I left full time ministry. I have to admit I have been struggling to be hopeful lately. Between open borders, and the US economy and how it is impacting people at a local level, and now the Crisis in Israel, in many ways I’m thinking we are done. As I am discouraged I find myself shifting my mentality from a hopeful, peaceful attitude to one of self preservation. How do I protect myself and my family from what I believe seems to be coming?

Then yesterday as I engage in a LifeStation Discovery Bible Discussion with a few friends I am challenge to think differently. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation”. “God is reconciling the world to Himself”. Followers of Jesus are his ministers, they are His ambassadors….ok I can’t give up, I can’t lose hope. My faith requires me to lean in and hope in the midst of the most hopeless situations.

Today I read Psalms 119:49-56. “The promises of God have given me Hope”. “My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promises preserve my life.” “I remember your ancient laws and I find comfort in them”. “Your decrees are the theme of my song wherever I make my home….This has been my practice: I obey your precepts.

Today, with all that is going on in the world I am choosing to allow the Hope and Peace of God to guide me. I am choosing to continue to practice the ways of Jesus as I desire to be an ambassador of Christ to those around me. God may this start in my home and then go with me wherever my life is stationed today!

Covid 19 Impacting both Life and Death

On Thursday March 26th, my grandmother Charolette Blount passed away in her home under the care of hospice and our family. The past several months my grandfather, mom, sister and dad cared for her during her decline. Dementia had set in and it was next to impossible to know how long we would have with her. With Covid-19 looming large, our family did our best to spend time with Mawmaw as it seemed the time was coming near.

A few days prior to my grandmothers passing, my dad and grandfather visited the funeral home and worked through the arrangements. I, being a pastor, was asked to officiate. My grandfather, being a vet, requested a small graveside service at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. It was not long after this that COVID-19 caused “Social Distancing” to be enforced at greater measures.

On the day my grandmother passed, we were told that Indiantown Gap was no longer allowing graveside services. We were told ten people would be able to arrive in cars, but would not be allowed to exit their cars. This news was shocking and disappointing. In a moment our plans to celebrate and remember her life were gone. Our plan B options were to to do something small and then a public remembrance later, or do something small and livestream it for friends and family who would not be able to attend. With family in California and Georgia, and a desire not to prolong the grieving process, we chose the latter.

As a pastor who has not led a livestream church service, preparing for a livestream funeral was odd. My family would be present, but other family members and friends would have to choose to watch online. In many ways there was a dual gathering occurring. I felt led to be present with both my family that was in the room with me, but also address those who would be viewing the video. This service was a blessing to me and my family, but no doubt Covid-19’s impact was felt. It was so much different than I would have ever anticipated for my grandmothers funeral.

A beautiful highlight came as we left the funeral home and prepared to leave for the burial. A dear couple, who had watched the service online, was standing on the sidewalk waving to us as we passed. They came to show their love and support!

Our time at Indiantown Gap and the burial was just as strange. We were allowed out of cars, but needed to remain about 100 yards from the grave, behind a fence. In many ways it felt very depersonalized as we stood from afar and watched our dear grandmother be placed in her final resting place.

We are thankful for family and friends who have shown their love and support during this time. There is no doubt Covid-19 is impacting every aspect of life and death.

Feel free to watch our grandmother’s virtual funeral. She was an amazing woman who showed tremendous love and kindness.

It is what it is, so embrace it, and allow God to use it!

Today I had the privilege to connect with my Spiritual Director at the Kavanna House. As we talked about my faith and life something occurred to me. I’m learning to BE who God has created me to be.  I’m learning to BE ok with life as it happens.

A common phrase I hear in my construction world is “it is what it is.”  At first I wasn’t a fan of this phrase, but I have learned to embrace it. The world of construction is tough. Every day there are challenges to overcome. I used to get so frustrated at mistakes and challenges, but I am slowly learning to accept them-  “it is what it is-” I can’t change my current reality but I can decide where to go from here.

With that said I am learning to embrace what is. Embrace the moment. Embrace the opportunity. Embrace reality. Embrace the feelings present in that reality. More importantly I am learning that God is with us in the midst of what is. As a follower of Jesus I am never alone. I never have to worry or fear. I can trust that my God can give me wisdom and direction no matter what I am facing. He can bring peace in the midst of the storms of life. He can take broken things and make them beautiful. He is a craftsman and He is always working. The crazy, amazing thing is I can join God in midst of each and every circumstance.

As I learn to BE who He has created me to BE I am set free to live. I am free to live life moment by moment, circumstance by circumstance, and in the midst of it all I can embrace what He wants to do. I can trust Him to lead, guide and direct me. I have the opportunity to be like Christ.

So may tomorrow be a day that I face each and every circumstance fully aware of who I am. May tomorrow be a day that I embrace each circumstance  and surrender it to God. May I notice what He is guiding and directing me to do. May tomorrow be a day that I chose to follow Christ. “It is what it is” and I will embrace what it is and allow God to use me in the midst of it!

Prayer … is waking up to the presence of God no matter where I am or what I am doing. When I am fully alert to whatever or whoever is right in front of me; when I am electrically aware of the tremendous gift of being alive; when I am able to give myself wholly to the moment I am in, then I am in prayer. Prayer is happening, and it is not necessarily something that I am doing. God is happening, and I am lucky enough to know that I am in The Midst.

And he said “Contemplating My Existence”

Last week I went from Jury Duty on Monday and Tuesday to restoration of a fire-damaged McDonalds on Wednesday. Pretty much since then it has been non-stop lets get this thing opened. In a week I have met some new people who I look forward to getting know more. In a week I have learned a lot about running a fast paced job for GCM.

But today, I was reminded how God is working. Sitting at a front counter waiting for some material I needed for my project, I apologized to the man next to me for taking so long. He said no worries, I’ve got time, I’m just sitting here contemplating my existence. My response “wow that is deep.” He said, “yeah I am sorry man.” I said “no problem, just got to be careful what you say out loud, I’m a Pastor and love those kind of conversations.”  He responded with “yeah I know where I am spending Eternity.”

After a bit of silence I said, “glad you got eternity figured out, for me the hardest part is walking the unknown day to day journey.” To which he replied, “yeah that seems to be the hardest part.”  This lead me to talking about why “sharing faith and life” with a community of faith believers is so important. I shared my thoughts on church and he was interested. He said, “I don’t like ‘traditional Churches’.”

The guy next to me then said “so you must not like mega/large churches.” I said, “I simply don’t think there is one model for everyone anymore. We need different types of churches for different stages/seasons of life people are in.” He said, “yeah I’m a pastor too, and I’m out here working like you. I’ve been doing bi-vocational ministry for 10 years. The church I’m a part of has around 100 people and everyone ministers to each other.”  We chatted and the “Contemplating my Existence” guy listened in and said “thanks for conversation”.

Seriously, two Pastors, who are living out their faith and life a bit different in the same store with a man who is Contemplating his Existence. God is working wherever our lives are stationed. He is drawing men and women unto Himself.

Lord help my eyes and ears be open to what you are doing. Help me to be like Christ to those I come in contact with. May the way I live, think, and act be used as seeds of hope and faith in the lives of those I come in contact with in the places I live, work, learn, and play!

Facebook Message Reminded Me- UnKnowing Impact

This week I received one of the most impactful FaceBook messages I have ever received.  Someone who I had brief interaction with several years ago sent me a message simply to let me know how his life has changed. I had no IDEA the impact my life had on him.

My desire is to encourage followers of Jesus to declare a different way to live life where ever our lives are stationed. To believe this God has asked me to step out of my comfort-zone. I am in the most challenging season of my life and sometimes I wonder how does one really make a difference for God.

The FaceBook Message I got came at the right time. See, in my heart I believe that no matter where our lives are stationed, we can have an impact for God, but often I hear a different message. Despite having moved away from full-time paid ministry over a year and a half ago, sometimes I still hear voices from my past that basically say, “to really make a difference for God you have to be a pastor or missionary.” There are days when I feel like this. There are days when I wrestle and say is this statement right? Maybe full time ministry is the only way to have an impact.

But this Facebook Message reminded me that often followers of Jesus can unknowingly have impact on the lives of others. I was reminded that 6 years ago I simply went out and spent some time with a young man. I don’t remember much about that day. I remember basketball and then going back to drop him off at his house. His parents where home so I went in to introduce myself. And this is where the impact happened.

The Facebook Message states that as I entered his home the dynamics of his household changed. The brief time we spent together was the start of transformation in his family. …”our faith has been spreading. And the wake up call all began that day when you took me out and came in to meet my family. You personally have been an extreme blessing to my family, with your presence alone you changed the dynamics of it for the better.”

I write this for one purpose. I write this because this helps me to continue to believe that no matter where our lives are stationed we can declare a different way to live life. As we share our faith and lives with others, “our presence alone can bring about change.”

It is the desire of our hearts that is key. My prayer is that we would be able to trust God with the impact our lives make. We don’t need to compare. We don’t need to have a list of people we have brought to church. It doesn’t even matter how many people you have “saved.”  What matters is the desire of your heart. Because maybe, you’re unknowingly having an impact.

A Balanced Pursuit

I am learning a lot these days. Life outside of full-time paid ministry has not been easy. Over the past year we added a fourth child and entered the world of Construction. Our family has been in a very different season.

In the midst of this season, God has been faithful. God is using me and our family for His glory, but very different ways. Our time commitment to our Church and Community has been very different. After a long days work I get home and my wife needs a break. Because of my experience, I’ve realized that some of the expectations that I place on others, especially in my faith community, is unrealistic. Sharing faith and life is not easy. People go through different seasons where commitment levels vary. Our commitment level to our church and community has not been as high as it has been in the past, but God has still used us in both our church and community.

As I say this, God has been challenging me to think beyond this season. Our kids are getting older and we are starting to adjust to my new job and its commitments. My wife and I are closer than ever. My appreciation for all that she does has increased. My kids are becoming more involved in the community as they develop friendships and participate in activities. Naturally, our community involvement is increasing.

So what specifically is God challenging me with?  Although we have different seasons, I need to have a balanced pursuit of God. Because of my calling and spiritual gifts, there are certain things that I need to be doing to BE healthy. For the past 5 years I have been discovering more and more about myself. The Kavanna House and their Spiritual Practices class heightened my understanding of this. During the Spiritual Practices classes we developed a Rule of Life, which I am still learning to apply today.  This Rule of Life, is the Balanced Pursuit of God that I am desiring. I am still not sure what it looks like, and I believe it will shift a bit with different seasons, but this is the way I desire to live my life.  This Diagram depicts my Rule of Life and a Balanced Pursuit of God.

Resigning as a Paid Pastor

It is official.  For the first time since graduating college in 2005 I will not be paid to be a Pastor. I will still be a Pastor, because it is who I am, I just won’t get paid to do it. I will still be giving Pastoral leadership to LifeStation Church, I just won’t get paid to do it.  Ok I think you get the point.

Over the past 10 years God has showed me so much about myself. Finally I feel like I can embrace the fact that I am a Pastor. So why am I leaving my paid position as a Pastor? Over the past 10 years I have unknowingly bought into the idea that the best way God can use someone who has a desire to impact people for Jesus is for them to be in full time ministry in some capacity. But God has been burdening my heart with the idea that no matter where our lives are stationed, followers of Jesus can and should have an impact. Wherever followers of Jesus are light should shine in the darkness. I think I believe that….but maybe I don’t believe that one is important as the 99.

Over the past year God has been showing me that as I share my faith and life with one or two the impact can be just as significant as the message that I share with hundreds. I am learning that my presents in the world, as a Pastor, matters just as much as what I do. As a paid Pastor I had the tendency to get caught up in what I got paid to do. Often this distracted me from being with God and others. Being paid to be a Pastor put a burden on me that made me feel like I had to produce. I had to show my self worthy as a faithful servant. I had to produce results. I think this often lead to me missing the 1 for the 99. I looked at peoples gifts and abilities and what they could do for the church and often missed them.

I am learning that as I spend time being with 1 the impact still happens. As I love and care for the 1 that God puts in front of me, God some how works in my life and theirs. He encourages us and then multiplies this effort. The 1 often goes and spends time with another and the cycle repeats itself.

Yes I am no longer going to be a PAID Pastor, but I believe that God is setting me free to love and serve people like never before. I believe God wants me to see and experience the fact that no matter where my life is stationed, as I am aware of the people who God places in front of me, I will have an impact for Christ. I will encourage others to follow Jesus as I spend time with Him and reflect His light into the world.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

Starting January 1st, 2015 I will be an employee of General Construction Management based out of Mt. Joy. Several years ago my dad took over ownership of this company and he desires it to be a company that God uses for His glory! I am going to join his team and do my best to learn the business. In more ways then one I am stepping out of the boat and trusting God to give me the wisdom and understanding I will need for this new season of my life. I am trusting God to help me, a Pastor, to use my other gifts and abilities to increase my influence for Jesus.

I am thankful for LifeStation Church and the support of me on this journey. I am thankful that we are standing together to declare a different way to live life.

This year I believe God is asking me to draw closer to Him then ever before.  As a “Paid” Pastor some times my drivers was marked by shame and failure. I wanted to have an impact. I wanted to produce.  This year I am walking out of the darkness and into the light. This year I want to walk into the HOPE OF LIFE and the FREEDOM Jesus won for me!

NOTE: I do not believe that I was wrong to be a paid “Pastor”, actually I think full time “paid” pastors are important, but God is showing me that I need to believe that He can use me wherever my life his stationed.
